Students from various educational institutions and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and large number of women participated in the workshop.
Dr. Girija Vyas in her inaugural address said that need of the hour is to make the Commission more powerful to handle the situation arising due to increasing harassment to women with each passing day, adding that there are stringent laws in this regard which needs to forced firmly. She said that the Commission has submitted seven new laws to the union Government for enactment. She said that the role of the civil society be the voice of the women adding that NGOs and social organizations should come forward for empowering the women in every field of life so that they should feel the authority to decide and deliver.
Speaking on the occasion, the Speaker Legislative Assembly urged to work together and fight for rights and fulfil your duty. He asked the concerned to organize awareness camps in remote and rural areas so that the women living in these areas are fully aware about their rights. He said the society as a whole should work for the upliftment, empowerment of the women adding that the Government is very at beck and call. He said that he is very proud that some women doctors are working in remote areas.
Responding to a question raised by the Speaker, it was informed that the Commission has organized various awareness camps at Kupwara, Ganderbal, Tral and Kargil. He was also informed that the creation of cells at block levels is anvil.
Chairperson, SWC Advocate Shamim Firdous in her address said that it is most disgusting thing that it is not just men but women who have accepted slavery as their fate. Indian women are the most faithful, they think it is their birth right to bear with such treatment. She said that they are asked to treat and serve their husband.
s Firdous Shamim said that plight of women who were considered to be mentally, physically and financially dependent on their husbands has changed now and are working in every field consider to be male dominated.
