Lahore: Former Pakistani Prime Minister and leader of Muslim League (N) Mian Nawaz Sharif with his family members has arrived Lahore where they welcomed by his party members. A spokesman of the party has claimed police was arresting their workers all day long to weaken the welcome.
Nawaz Sharif was deported back to Saudi in September when he reached Islamabad but this time, according to sources, the government will not arrest or deport him as he is returning home under a secret agreement with the military ruler Gen. Musharraf who had removed him from power in 1999.
Nawaz Sharif, who is returning with his family including brother and wife, is expected to land in Lahore Sunday afternoon after which he will attend the Data Darbar shrine and then lead his party workers to Raiwand, his residence.
His party workers are gathering in Lahore to welcome him in the country. In September, when he returned without the permission of the rulers, his workers were arrested and beaten by police but this time they are allowed to gather and welcome their leader, as another political leader Benazir Bhutto was.
Informed sources have told that Nawaz Sharif was returning home under an agreement between him and Gen. Musharraf. According to the agreement, Nawaz Sharif will not take part in the coming election, will not give any kind of political support to Peoples Party and will never demand the restoration of the suspended judges.
Observers say that after Gen. Musharraf was disappointed from Benazir Bhutto’s cooperation in electing him as President for another term, he first imposed emergency to save his ‘uniform’ and then contacted Nawaz Sharif for a deal. As Muslim League is considered a party always supported by military dictators, the deal is not unexpected.
