After traveling to Honduras Monday evening, Mexico has been preparing themselves for the upcoming match against Honduras. Sven Goran Eriksson did not seem worried with the absences of some players that were thought to be ready for the match.
The Absences
Edgar Castillo did not travel with the team because of a missing passport which will not allow him to travel to Honduras. In various Mexican newspapers it is stated that Castillo has tried to acquire a new passport but was unsuccessful because he was required to provide birth certificates of both of his parents, able to get his mothers but not his fathers.
Ricardo Osorio, as stated by the Mexican press, will not play because of a stomach infection. Osorio will return to his German club, Stuttgart, once he recovers from the infection.
Many had hopes of being able to see Giovani Dos Santos play on Wednesday but he will also miss the match. The injury that had caused him to miss the match on Saturday has also sentenced him to miss the match against Honduras. Dos Santos is able to play but Medics for the National Team have suggested to leave him out of the match. Dos Santos will return to England, to his club Ipswich Town.
Another absence will be captain Rafael Marquez, who is still serving his 2-game sanction for being penalized during the USA – Mexico match. Carlos Pavon, Forward for the Honduran National Team, stated in an interview with ESPN Deportes that the absence of Rafael Marquez is significant being that Marquez is an "Icon, captain of his national team."
The Solution
Eriksson has stated that there will be no more call-ups with the absences because he feels that the team is capable with the number of players they already have.
With the returns of Carlos Salcido and Carlos Vela, Mexico may be short on players but not on hopes. Salcido may start on the defense and provide the sturdy and firm back line while Carlos Vela, if started, will provide the fire power for the offense.
Eriksson will, once again, probably be hoping for the best results since his job has been hanging by a thread. Will Mexico pull through for their coach or will it be the domino effect all over again? Come Wednesday we will all see for ourselves.
