Over one-third of the world’s population is estimated to be infected with the TB bacteria, and approximately 2 million deaths and 9 million new cases of TB disease are reported each year.
TB spreads between an infected person and others through bacteria-containing droplets coughed into the air by the infected person.
Meanwhile World TB Day 2009 was observed by District Tuberculosis Control Society Kathua of Jammu region today. An awareness rally of over 100 school children, trainees of ANMT School and Red Cross Volunteers was taken out from Govt. Degree College Kathua on this occasion which rally was flagged off by Ms. Mandeep Kaur District Development Commissioner Kathua (Chairperson Distt. Tuberculosis Control Society).
The children were carrying play cards and banners depicting the theme of World TB Day 2009 like "I AM STOPPING TB" “TB is Curable”, “DOT Sure cure for TB”, “Fighting TB is the responsibility of every citizen” and other information regarding TB and its control activities. The rally passed from the main bazaar of Kathua and dispersed at PWD Dak Bunglow Kathua.
Speaking on the occasion the DDC underscored the need for creating mass awareness regarding the mode of spread of the disease, its control through various initiatives like RNTCP, DOTS etc.and to propagate the message that the TB is fully curable.

Among others, Dr. Ashok Kumar Chief Medical Officer Kathua, Dr. J.C. Bhagat Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kathua, Dr. Ajay Khajuria BMO Hiranagar, Dr. Ashok Choudhary BMO Parole, Dr. Sanjay Arora WHO Consultant RNTCP, Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Superintendent MGI-I Kathua, Sh. S.D. Singh and other prominent citizens and officers of various departments were also present on the occasion.
