The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in the United States, 18% of children between the ages of 6 – 11 years old and 1/3 of adults are obese. Now more than ever, it is vital to teach children the benefits of eating healthy and how eating right can have a positive impact on your overall health and skin. This September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and Crystal Wellman, master aesthetician and owner of Crystal Clear Acne Clinic, will collaborate with Dr. Yum of the Dr. Yum Project to educate children on the importance of eating right and the best foods to eat for your health and skin.
“Together with Dr. Yum, we are educating children and parents about healthy food choices and the importance of starting to eat nutritious foods right now through ongoing workshops and classes,” affirms Crystal Wellman, master aesthetician and owner of Crystal Clear Acne Clinic. “It’s true: you are what you eat and it’s important to eat right.”
“Food is your body’s natural medicine and what you put into your body has a huge impact on your health,” affirms Dr. Nimali Fernando, pediatrician and founder of the Doctor Yum Project. “Understanding what foods have necessary vitamins and nutrients is paramount at any age.”
To teach kids about the benefits of eating healthier early on and how it impacts your overall skin and health, Crystal Wellman and the Dr. Yum Project suggest activities such as:
Outdoor Gardening. Growing the right vegetables full of Vitamin C, such as broccoli, strawberries and bell peppers, keep your skin healthy and protected from damage from outside chemicals. A garden provides the opportunity for children to learn about fruits and vegetables hands-on and eat the fruits of the labor.
Cooking Class. By involving children in the process of cooking their meals, they have the chance to learn which foods are good for your health and which foods to avoid. For example, instead of cooking shellfish, try a dish with salmon, which includes omega-3 and omega-6, known to improve your skin.
Kids’ Cooking Club. The Dr. Yum Project offers a Kids Cooking Adventure class, a perfect opportunity for children to learn how to make their own healthy nutritious food. The class involves children learning the health benefits of different foods and basic cooking skills.
Healthy Recipes. Focus on foods that are full of vitamins to improve your health. On September 17th, 2014, Crystal Wellman is leading a class to educate all about the best foods for your skin health, such as nuts and fish. Attendees can learn the recipes to make healthy foods, like fruit water and summer hummus.
“If children learn how to eat healthy now, they can continue eating right for the rest of their lives,” affirms Wellman. “Foods can have a massive impact on your health and the health of your skin. By educating children at a young age, we present them with the opportunity to stay healthy and continue educating others.”
