Srinagar, December 4 (Scoop News) –The Governor, . N. N. Vohra said that groups of young scientists should be constituted to look at their local problems, perhaps by taking the district as the basic unit and apply the latest available science and technology approaches for increasing productivity and production in the varied sectors.
The Governor, as Chief Guest, was addressing the Valedictory Session of the 3-day 6th JK Science Congress at the Kashmir University, here this evening. The Science Congress was organised by the University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir State Council for Science and Technology on the theme of “Science, Technology and Sustainable Development”.
He stressed the need for effective application of the findings of the research conducted in the realms of science, technology and engineering by adopting area specific approaches to solve the developmental needs of the people and also contribute to the creation of greater employment opportunities for the youth.
The Governor emphasised that various Task Forces should be organised for giving boost to different sectors of the economy by applying available research findings in these arenas. He said that we have a vast scope for boosting production and productivity in the sectors of agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, saffron cultivation, sericulture, dairy-farming, mushroom cultivation etc and this needs to be effectively harnessed in the State both for securing the objective of economic development and generating jobs. He said that we have to involve our senior and young researchers of both the State Agriculture Universities to focus on such entrepreneurial initiatives which lead to fast and sustainable economic growth coupled with the generation of larger employment avenues.
While stressing the need for judicious use of natural resources and ensuring protection of the environment and ecology, the Governor observed that it is very important and relevant that we urgently find practical solutions to problems like global warming, climate change, scarcity of water resources, as all these are affecting all forms of life.
The Governor lauded the Vice Chancellor of the Kashmir University for organising the Science Congress in the month of December with a large participation both from within and outside the State.
The Governor gave away “Best Presentation Awards” to five young scientists on this occasion on behalf of the J&K Academy of Sciences and the University of Kashmir. The award comprised a certificate and Rs. 5,000 each. He interacted with each of them, enquired about the area and findings of their research projects and applications thereof. He congratulated them and wished them a bright career ahead.
The Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, speaking on the occasion, give details of various initiatives being taken by the University to promote research in the various disciplines of science. He described the 6th JK Science Congress as an important scientific event as it dealt with an important theme of “Science, Technology and Sustainable Development”. He thanked the Governor, who is the Chancellor of the University, for addressing the Valedictory Session of the Science Congress as its Chief Guest. He said that the State has a talented pool of young scientists who are contributing in a big way in the promotion of scientific temper.
The Convenor of the Science Congress and Dean, Academic Affairs, Kashmir University, Prof. A. R. Yousuf, presented the report and recommendations of the 6th JK Science Congress.
A young participant of the Conference from Delhi, Ms Manisha Singh, also spoke on the occasion and gave her observations on the most successful conduct of the 6th JK Science Congress.
Earlier, the Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Prof. N. A. Shah, in his welcome address, dwelt on the proceedings of the 3-day Science Congress, the number of participants, deliberations held and the papers presented during this event.
The Director, CORD, Prof. A. N. Kamili, presented a Vote of Thanks.
A large number of scientists, researchers, Deans, Heads of departments, Faculty Members, senior officers and students were present on the occasion.
