Yulia Tymoshenko Elected As Ukraine’s Prime Minister

Yulia Tymoshenko, the leader of the 2004 Orange Revolution, won the position of prime minister by a narrow 226 votes in the 450-seat parliament. However, the vote was boycotted by opponents of Yulia Tymoshenko.

Ukraine’s president Viktor Yushchenko has backed Yulia Tymoshenko as prime minister. However, Tymoshenko was sacked from her position as prime minister earlier in her tenure by Yushchenko himself. Ever since a general election in September, Ukraine did not have a prime minister.

She insists that the alliance with Yushchenko is still strong.

Last week, she was short of becoming prime minister by only one vote.

Viktor Yanukovych and MPs from the Party of Regions did not participate in the vote. He himself is a former prime minister who had won the presidency in 2004 which was dubbed controversial. That led to the Orange Revolution which was a series of street protests.

The protests had forced Yanukovych out of office with his rival, Yushchenko.

Most of Tymoshenko’s support comes from the western part of Ukraine.
