During the parliamentary elections of Pakistan, both the PPP and the PML-N had won the elections. In turn, they have dealt a crushing blow to the PML-M, the party of current Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. As a result, Musharraf has lost his influence.
The elections were postponed until February after the chaos that followed after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. A recent investigation had said that the leader of the Taliban in Pakistan with ties to the terrorist network known as Al-Qaeda, was responsible for Bhutto’s assassination. However, many in Pakistan also gave blame to President Musharraf, himself.
Musharraf has been a key ally to the United States in Pakistan on the war on terror. As a result of the elections, the US government had urged the parliament to work with President Musharraf.
After the elections, Zadari and Sharif have signed an agreement where they will share power in a new coalition. Under this new coalition, the judges that were sacked by Musharraf will be reinstated by a resolution to be passed by parliament.
Under this new coalition, it is possible that parliament could call forth for Musharraf to be impeached from office.
