It what could be deemed another all time low for the administration of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe of the Zanu-PF, his administration has told Movement for Democratic Change Party (MDC) leader and opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai to stop campaigning.
Recently, Tsvangirai was arrested and detained for eight hours before being released. Today, Tsvangirai was once again detained by Zimbabwean police. Tsvangirai and the MDC accuse Mugabe and his administration of using fear and intimidation to sabotage the run-off election set for June 27.
According to the polls in March, Tsvangirai had come out as the winner. But, he did not have enough to avoid a run-off election. Post-election violence erupted as a result. Mugabe’s administration blames the MDC for the violence that has brewed. The UN and human rights groups blame Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party for most of the violence.
Mugabe has been accused of stealing the election. But, he dismissed all criticism and charged that Tsvangirai is nothing but a puppet for the British government.
A day earlier, US and British embassy workers came to check on the victims of the post-election violence. They were detained by the Zimbabwean authorities. Also, relief agencies have been stopped from doing work as they have been accused of aiding the MDC.
But once again, Tsvangirai has been arrested and detained. Tsvangirai was eventually released again. Many have called it a stunt to keep Tsvangirai from reaching his campaign rallies.
