In Zimbabwe’s capital of Harare, more arrests and detainments have been made. This time, those arrested were not supporters of the opposition party, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Many have criticized Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, his administration, and his Zanu-PF Party for the violence and crumbling economy that plagues the country.
Mugabe had blamed opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC for the violence. However, human rights groups and the United Nations blame Mugabe and the Zanu-PF for most of the violence.
Recently, Tsvangirai was arrested and detained for at least eight hours before being released.
Earlier today, workers from both the United States and British embassies in Harare were detained. They were visiting those that suffered through the violence after the election and before the runoff election. Tsvangirai had won the elections; but, he did not get enough to avoid a runoff election.
Top US diplomat to Africa Jendayi Frazer accuses Mugabe’s administration of trying to steal the election. Many feel that Mugabe is trying whatever it takes to remain in power.
As for the staffers from the embassies, they are still being detained.
