If given a third of the cabinet seats, Hezbollah and its allies would give a veto over key decisions concerning Lebanon’s government. Hassan Hasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader had blamed the United States for obstructing a solution to Lebanon’s crisis by opposing such a move.
Lebanon’s government which is backed by the Western nations has repeated Hezbollah’s demands for veto power many times. The government so far has proposed a reforming of the cabinet which would allow the president to cast a vote.
Ever since the 2006 war with Israel, Hezbollah has demanded a third of the cabinet seats.
Walid Jumblatt, the leader of Druze who is aligned with the government has accused Hezbollah of making impossible demands. Jumblatt said that Hezbollah was more loyal to Syria and Iran than it is to Lebanon.
For over five weeks, Lebanon has been without a president due to disputes between the government and the opposition. A session to elect the president is due to begin on January 12.
The main dispute is how to shape the future government.
