Srinagar/Jammu, December 02 (Scoop News) – Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board, Regional Directorate Kashmir, observed the National Pollution Prevention Day today by organizing an awareness program, in association with Indian Youth Climate Network, on polythene carry bags involving the students of Eco-Clubs from different schools.
During the program at Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Amira Kadal and Karan Nagar, the students took polythene carry bags from shoppers, vendors, shopkeepers, etc. and instead handed over them eco-friendly paper carry bags from J&K SPCB. The students also made the people aware about the hazards of polythene.
“Besides being non-biodegradable and hence dangerous for the environment, carrying of foodstuff in polythene carry bags is also hazardous to health,” the students informed the people.
Polythene carry bags have been banned in Jammu & Kashmir vide SRO 182 in the light of Non-biodegradable Material (Management, Handling and Disposal) Rules, 2009.
The drive found a positive response from the general public who appreciated the efforts of the Board.
The Regional Director, J&K SPCB Kashmir, S.F.A Gillani said the Board have been taking up such campaigns in the past also and such programs will be conducted on valley-vide scale in the future. We will also take action against the defaulters and the dealers found still trade in the banned material.
The National Pollution Prevention Day is observed as the anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1982 when Methyl Isocyanate leaked from a factory killing hundreds of people and rendering thousands disabled.
In nJammu State Pollution Control Board, (SPCB) in collaboration with Association of Industries Jammu, also observed ‘National Pollution Prevention Day’ to commemorate thousands of persons who lost their lives in ‘The Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
The Day was observed by organizing a seminar on the theme of “Prevention & Control of Industrial Pollution” at ASSI Bhawan, industrial Area, Gangyal,
Commissioner/Secretary Forests, Shantmanu, Chairman, SPCB, Lal Chand, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, (PCCF) & Director SFRI, R.D.Tiwari, Member Secretary PCB, Dr. Mohit Gera, Director Industries, B.S. Dua and T.S. Reen, President, Association of Industries Jammu, besides other senior officers of
Commissioner/Secretary Forests, Shantmanu, while welcoming the industrial development in the State expressed concern over increasing levels of pollution in the state. He appealed for creating awareness among the industrialists about the hazards of pollution, simplification of regulatory processes and strict action against the defaulting units.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman, SPCB, Lal Chand threw light on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and informed the gathering that such a great loss has taken place due to negligence and compromise with the safety standards in control of pollution. According to him requisite preventive measures should be taken to avert such unfortunate incidences. He further appealed industrialists to follow the norms like adoption of pollution control measures and safe disposal of industrial waste.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, (PCCF) & Director SFRI, R.D.Tiwari also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the complementary role of industry and Pollution Control Board to ensure clean environment in the State. He stressed the need for environmental audit and introduction of clean technology in all developmental activities.

Director Industries, B.S. Dua highlighted the role of State and Centre in boosting the already backward industrial sector in the State. He stressed on the need to facilitate industries which comply with the regulatory requirements. He also impressed upon the need for delegation of powers to regulatory organization, time bound clearances and the rationalization.
Mohammad Mouzam, MD SIDCO apprised the gathering on efforts of SIDCO in greening of industrial estates and for providing effluent treatment facilities.
