Indian police have arrested a second man in connection with the death of a British teenager, Scarlett Keeling found dead on a beach in the coastal state of Goa last month.
Placido Carvalho, also known as Shanuboy, has been charged with rape and murder as well as supplying drugs to Scarlett Keeling.
Police earlier arrested a bartender, saying they have evidence also linking him to the 15-year-old girl’s death. The 29-year-old bartender has not yet been charged.
Both men were with Scarlett the night she died, told the reports.
"It’s just a matter of tying loose ends," Inspector General of Police Kishan Kumar said.
Scarlett’s mother, Fiona MacKeown, has been outspoken about the police handling of the case, saying she believes police have covered up evidence and bungled the investigation.
Police initially said Scarlett drowned after drinking too much, and they said her body had been found in the sea.
MacKeown disputed that, saying witnesses found Scarlett’s body on the beach covered in bruises, which suggested murder.
MacKeown said she has pictures of her daughter’s body from the autopsy that clearly show bruises all over.
Scarlett had been on an extended vacation with her family in Goa but was living with a male friend and his aunts while the rest of her family traveled to an adjoining Indian state.
The mother said she knew the man and his family "quite well" and they treated Scarlett like a part of the family, though she said Scarlett and the man eventually started a sexual relationship.
