Though the Sixth Pay Commission Report submitted by Justice Srikrishna has been said to be in favor of the Group A or Class I officers, recommending as much as Rs 90,000/- as a maximum scale for them, still the report has not rendered justice to many a deserving personnel at the top level as revealed by the recent exodus of the scientists from the Government sector to the Private sector. Perhaps this is the worst effect of the Sixth Pay Commission Report that needs to be addressed by the Indian Government as expeditiously as possible, lest many top Indian Scientists may become Non-Resident Indians in the near future.
Atomic and Space Research in the country is in for a crisis following an unprecedented increase in the number of scientists leaving these departments to take up assignments in private sector, according to a senior scientist of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
He said that the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission (SCPC) which dashed the hopes of scientific community that their emoluments and retirement benefits would find some improvement were forcing many scientists to quit research jobs and move over to industries which offer them dream salaries and other perks.
‘There is all round disappointment over the SCPC’s recommendations.More than a dozen scientists and technologists have quit the department of atomic energy and space in search of greener pastures. It is alarming situation. All of them who quit were holding critical positions in the senior central research laboratories like the Baba Atomic Research Centre, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research and Nuclear Fuel Complex,What is alarming is the Department is facing severe crunch as new talents do not show any inclination to join us,’said the DAE scientist who didn’t want to disclose his identity.
Joseph Winston, President of the newly formed Confederation of Atomic and Space Scientists and Technologists (COAST) told reporters on Friday that the Sixth Pay Commission was indiscriminatory as it favoured the bureaucrats alone.
